Building Schools for the Future programme halted
In July 2010, the Department for Education called a halt to the Building Schools for the Future programme meaning that 706 schools already in the programme will be opened under new arrangements, whilst 715 schools will no longer be rebuilt or refurbished through BSF.
The inquiry found that schools are a much under utilised resource for facilities and recommends that all schools are obliged to open their premises for out of hours sporting usage. The halting of the Building Schools for the Future programme may result in the short term in significantly less opportunities for the development or improvement of new sporting facilities. However, the Government will also launch a comprehensive Review of all capital investment in schools, early years, colleges and sixth forms to guide future spending decisions from 2011-2015. The Facilities Inquiry will seek to input to the review of school capital spending in order to promote the development of sporting facilities which are suitable for use out of school hours.
